Starlink is officially supporting "Portability"

Starlink is excited to announce Portability as an add-on feature for all Starlink customers. Portability enables customers to temporarily move their Starlink to new locations and receive high-speed internet anywhere where Starlink provides active coverage within the same continent. To see active coverage areas, please view the Starlink Availability Map.

You can enable Portability for $25/month on your account page. Once enabled, Portability will take effect immediately, and you can disable Portability from your account page at any time.

Starlink is also charging an extra $25 a month if used away from your registered home cell. $135 a month still not too bad unless those pesky trees keep getting in the way.

you can now sign up directly to the roving/RV category. I'm on the waiting list for my residence but could change it to RV today and receive the equipment right away. But without knowing it will work at home in Burbank, CA I don't want to shell out $600.00. Decided to wait it out and see what others encounter.

You can get an equipment refund within a 30 days minus shipping. Not sure about service refund if you can’t get connected.

The thing about signing up for the RV plan is that you basically got non-prioritized service. Meaning it'll be slower for you there than people who eventually have it as their home/residential service. So, it's wait for faster or get it now and potentially have it slower.

Our preferred camping sites are wooded, shady and will never support Starlink. We're relying on 4G/5G...mostly 4G. At least cell signals can penetrate the woods where Starlink would be non-functional.

yea, that's the "catch" I'm not comfortable with. I think I'll wait for now. I'm on the "residential" wait list. My hope is to ditch everything else and just stream from Starlink, either at home or in the RV

Same, which is why I carry multiple backups.

But, I did also buy their 150' cord, so hopefully I can be in the trees and Starlink out in the sun. But we'll see how well it goes.

Once it comes down to a price that's reasonable, it'll be a game-changer. We had WildBlue years ago in a part of Southern AZ where we couldn't get cable (or electric). It was "just okay" and a lot of the stuff that SpaceX has done will hopefully fix the latency issues experienced with traditional SatCom. The problem is that it's still priced in a way that doesn't even come close comparing to LTE or 5G plans right now.

With an advertised 5-250Mbps (big swing) for Starlink vs 50 Mbps to 80 Mbps for 4G LTE, we feel like it's worth looking into a cellular for the time being. Granted, it'd be nice to see what Starlink is like in the real world.

I did read an interesting article on Carrier aggregation and theoretical speeds on a 4G LTE network that approach Gigabit speeds, but I don't know that there's any cellular hardware out there that would be able to handle that sort of demand.
