Stop Doing Stupid Stuff

So two weeks ago I was replacing the rusty screws with ss screws on the ladder on my 2861. Instead of using a step stool or ladder, I choose a half full (or half empty) five gallon paint bucket as my step. As I was desending, I missed the center of the bucket and found myself on the concrete. Of course after looking to see if anyone saw my misshap, I noticed a large scrape on my ankle, not to say my 64 yo body wasn't screaming, you fool. Daily, my ankle grew a large knot ( hematoma) and my ankle and foot turned black. It's getting better now. Moral of the story, stop doing stupid stuff and remember your brain might be 30 something but your body isn't.

Man thats tough. I think we have all taken short cuts when we shouldn't and regret it later. Smarter not harder.

Dave, welcome to the forum from the Space Coast of Florida :trink39:

I’ve always said “Living is hazardous to your health.” That is especially true now even when we are not doing stupid things... be safe!

Yup. I'm just a tad older. A poorly supported ladder cost me 3 fractured vertebrae and two broken ribs, three days before our scheduled "fall" trip. I only fell 4'.

Luckily I healed in time for a shortened/late fall trip with no long term effects. I'm not allowed on ladders anymore.

Be safe.

My brain is 16, my body remind my brain of my real age every time I do something stupid. So far I am unable to listen.

Welcome to the forum Dave. Not the usual "Hi, I'm new to the forum" post, but a good one for us all to heed. Glad you're okay. Now let's hear some good stories!

Four years ago, a week before going on a 2 month trip to Vancouver Island I fractured my 68 year old shoulder in 4 places.
Checking the seams on the roof of my trailer on a step ladder and leaned back too far from 7 feet up.
Landed on my shoulder on the concrete. That was the end of boon docking for the next two summers.
I have been extremely careful ever since.

I fell off a 16 foot ladder a few years ago. Fortunately I was only on the first rung.

Hit a tree riding one of my dirtbikes last week. Broke my leg in three places.

In 1968 rappelling from a chopper the last of 4 to descend when ground fire erupted. Chopper pilot was a new guy and popped the chopper UP and I went DOWN. Back broke ~~ an experienced pilot came to pick me up as the 1st guy was in fear mode. Rarely use a ladder now.

You should quit going to those 4 places. (Sorry, couldn't control my fingers on the keyboard. They made me say it.)

I did the same thing, using a 5 gallon bucket for a step stool to another spot even higher up. Unfortunately when I stepped back down my foot went right through the lid. Fortunately the bucket wasn't full of paint. Lesson learned.

After two falls that eventually required that I have a total shoulder replacement. I still use ladders and fear falling and causing more injuries. However at 72 years old I refuse to give up. This morning I was washing the roof of my trailer using two different ladders to climb on. I am like the saying goes I guess "I went to Jupiter to get stupider".

Healing takes time just take it easy for a while. It was Oct 10,2019 for my replacement and I am not 100% yet but getting better every day. It could go faster if the pandemic would get over with and the gym could reopen.

Stay safe everyone.
