Does any body have any idea how to cross the border? I have a passport. Never been out of the country so no idea how any of this works! What and how do I declare stuff? Do I need to itemize everything in my trailer?

There are more YouTube videos about crossing the Canadian border than you can watch in a lifetime.
I am from Baraboo, WI and we are heading to Alaska for 2 months this summer. We will be crossing in Sweet Grass Montana and going up the east route to Alaska. We are coming back on the western side of the Rockies.
When going to Alaska, remember that the distances are HUGE compared to Wisconsin. It is almost 4000 miles from Baraboo to Anchorage.

Super duper easy - IN PARTICULAR at regular/busy crossing points - just pay very close attention to the DO's and DO Not's and follow them strictly (there's precious little leeway granted, and RV'ers are notorious for having 'more' issues - mostly by virtue of us traveling with our houses on our backs). Pay particular attn to your groceries. DO NOT mess about with bringing a firearm and "hiding" it. You will have to pass through Customs and fill out the declaration form (E311), you don't have to itemize your entire trailer. There's a (yes)(no) checklist for stuff you're bringing in that will prompt further action/scrutiny.

Note: getting home (crossing CA->US) is where drivers are subject to more scrutiny with less friendly crossing officials. Same sorta deal, you'll need to make a Declaration about anything acquired outside the US and what you're crossing with (another yes/no form).

Surprised that the progessive link above says a passport is needed? I haven't traveled to Canada since the 90s but it seems to me only a driver license was needed...? EDIT: This changed in 2007 it appears, and DL's are accepted only if they are Enhanced i.e. include RFID chips which are available in only a limited number of states and not WI.

Just wait a while and it will be our 51st state. :)

I went to Canada in my airplane and they have certain airports you need to stop at once inside. I did that and there was a sign that said wait here in your airplane someone will be right out. After a while four people sitting in an airplane in the sun gets pretty hot. First windows are open then the doors. Tried calling on the radio no response. Finally I went inside. Walked down a hallway with little offices on each side. I passed about six doors before I came to a guy teaching ground school. I asked where the customs office was. I said I waited and called on the radio. He said are you out front there? Yes right by the sign, do you have any guns to declare? No, OK you are cleared have a good trip.
