I decided to post this here....to keep it light. But every time I see someone post things like "TV" or "TT" or DW" or....whatever on here, after living life as a Military Officer for almost 21 years in the US Air Force, and then working as a DoD contractor for 25 years after that first life (sorry, violating my own rule....DoD....Department of Defense of course!).....I decided to demonstrate clearly, why I prefer to spell out these words, instead of being lazy and using the abbreviation for it.

First off, why not spell it out? It's not that many letters. Really. I mean, I'm a CW guy in Ham Radio (sorry, here we go again....morse code....cw is an abbreviation for continuous wave....which is the designation for morse code. See, ISN'T THIS CONFUSING????????? :crying: ). In morse code, we use abbreviations because in sending morse code...and copying it....it REALLY is more difficult the more letters and figures you have. So I get it in that application. WX is weather. DE is from (it's a French thing.......), TU is thank you, 599 becomes 5nn....because sending a 9 is FIVE characters (dah dah dah dah dit) verses an "n" is two characters (dah dit). So it's quicker....easier....to send an n for a 9....as long as the receiver on the other end can figure out the n is really a 9....from context ....as in a signal report or 599 or 5nn. But we're not sending more code..........

And again, it's just a few letters. We have an abbreviation for a "TV"....as in television to MOST of the world. Why don't we have an abbreviation for radio? Sorry................I digress..........

So to show what I mean by confusion, and finally (thankfully) get to the point..... here is a list of COMMON uses for the abbreviation "TV":

TV Tuvalu (Regional Country abbreviation)

TV TeleVision (ahhhhh....what most of the world is probably thinking when you type that :D )

TV Terrain Visualization (Government/ Military)

TV Grupo (Televisa S. A. de C. V. used in Business » NYSE Symbols)

TV Tidal Volume (Academic & Science » Ocean Science)

TV Tinea Versicolor (Medical » Physiology)

TV Total Volume (Medical » Physiology)

TV Table View (settings in Computing » File Extensions)

TV Teaching Violence (Community » Educational term)

TV Time Vaporizer (term used in Science Fiction)

TV True Value (Business » Companies & Firms...I used this as a PMP in my work....sorry, Project Management Professional)

TV Turbine Velocity (Governmental » Military)

TV Tvs Vantage (Business » General Business)

TV Thunder Valley (Governmental » State & Local)

TV Tall Vintage (Miscellaneous » Food & Nutrition)

TV Treviso (Provence in Italy)

TV Transfer Voucher (Business » Accounting)

TV TeleVizyon (International » Turkish)

TV TransVestite (uhhh....no explanation given.......... )

TV Thermal Vacuum (Governmental » NASA)

TV Thrust Vector (Governmental » NASA...note even within an organization, many times....they have MULTIPLE meanings for the same abbreviation. Talk about CONFUSING!!)

TV Transport Vehicle (sorry.....that's what the Government calls it....NOT what you were thinking?)

Recognize a few of these? :peace: Ok, I'll stop..........oh wait.......forgot ONE.....

TV Tow Vehicle (there, JUST for you guys!)

And that's why I try HARD not to use abbreviations and acronyms any more than I have to....it's so simple to type it out....and abbreviations have SO MANY different meanings to so many different people.......

I kept seeing people referring to "DW" on here. So I googled it. And I found.....as soon as you Google DW, you get this -

What does 'dw' mean? "DW" stands for "don't worry." It is often used in text messaging to tell someone the situation is all good and to not stress. The slang reassures the other person to relax and that everything is OK.

Hmmm.....probably not what folks are referring to here? Let me go look some more....so I kept digging. And I found.....

1 dead weight

2 delayed weather

3 distilled water

4 dust wrapper

So I guess....those posts are referring to someone else in their family as "Dead Weight". Ok, just kidding.................. :signhavefun:

And now you know why I posted this under Jokes and Humor.....sort of....I think.........

Ask that on a Jeep forum and you'll immediately get "death wobble"

That's a long way to go to make a point about a pet peeve while trying to be humorous;)

Fortunately, in this forum, TV usually only means one of two things, determined by context. I see your point, but when using the same long word repeatedly in a post, abbreviations are just easier.

I suppose we could use 'telly' for less typing....;)

I'm on another message board that is mostly about Stephen King books and book collecting. Many times people will post about a book but shorten the title to just the letters. Sometimes it takes me several minutes to figure out which book they are talking about.

Like one of the titles is "The Wind Through the Keyhole".

Then I see someone type TWTTK and have to decipher it. :(

ok, I can't resist...........

DISCLAIMER - I can't take credit for these lists of abbreviation meanings....I'm finding them on the Internet.

Oh, one other one.....I THINK....some of you might mean on here? Though I'm not sure..............

DW Darling Wife (verses the Dear Wife listed above)

I'm just hoping IF you are referring to your Spouse....you mean it in the "Darling Wife" reference l just mentioned ....and not...the "Dead Weight" reference listed above! ;)

Looking over your list I only recognize and use:

TV = Tow Vehicle

T.V. = Television

DW is what people call me. My wife is known as "my bride".

:):):)

Oh my. I never noticed.....but sure enough....DW....that's your username on here! So I've learned yet another use :)

Hey guys, I'm just saying. Those of you who were in the military know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. I felt so sorry for new contractors and Civil Service folks who came into "our world" and had to decipher what on earth we were talking about.

Here's a TYPICAL military conversation about going on a few official trips on duty to a couple of locations:

"Sir, if it's all right I'd like to take my POV TDY. I checked the TO and I can't find any reason in the rules on PD that says it wouldn't be ok. On my next TDY, if I fly, I will want to RO in SF before the OCONUS part of the trip. I'll be taking the COTS items with me in my baggage. PACAF doesn't have those items in the BX for purchase."

Anyway, that's just typical of speaking around the military. It's chalk full of acronyms and abbreviations. Some of the acronyms, it's as if they paid someone to come up with clever acronyms that spell out words. It's kind of humorous at times........

Speaking of acronyms and abbreviations....here are some other ones folks use SO much.....you sometimes forget what they really meant originally....spelled out.....

RS....as in RS 232. RS is Recommended Standard
RADAR......Radio Detecting and Ranging
LED.....Light emitting Diode

I get it....folks like to take shortcuts. Just know sometimes, it can be confusing.

And one final note, the "grammar nerds" say....technically speaking - "Should television be spelled out or abbreviated? Spell out as a noun; OK to abbreviate as an adjective. Always capitalize when abbreviated."

So there you have it :signhavefun: Hey, I'm retired.....I can do this all day long :trink39:

If you really want to have fun and I have posted references to this before, google what TASER is an acronym for and where it originated. It's from a 1911 favorite childhood book of the inventor.

wow, never knew that one....

Thomas A Swift Electric Rifle. Never would have imagined it would be something like that. Was thinking it would be something "very technical sounding".

And that list of acronyms you gave me.....wow and wow again. Quite the list! I never imagined they even had acronyms for things like a camp fire. And some of the "acronyms", are LONGER than the word they represent. Case in point...."furry friends = pets".

Hey, after almost 45 years working in/for/with the Air Force, my last job.....that I lasted all of 4 months working before I became so frustrated I punched out and retired.....was working for the Navy. You'd think ....retired Officer with over 20 years IN the military.....25+ more years working as a Federal Contractor for the Military/DoD....you'd think transitioning to working with the Navy would be easy?

Nope. I was like a .....pardon my pun......"fish out of water". The Navy had an entire plethora of acronyms this 45+ year Air Force guy had never heard or dreamed of. I got so tired of sitting in meetings ....and trying to figure out what they were saying, I just punched out....retired....quit .

OK, I'm going camping next week (really I am....camping at a COE CG on the river on the AL/GA border). So I better start getting the HD LB PSD TV ready and hook up the TT and gather wood for the CF, while the DW gets packin' and checks that we have plenty of TP. Can't remember if we hit the DS last time we went out so I better check those tanks. I'm sure the furry friends will want to go with us too. I hope that COE CG has WES and a CF ring.

How'd I do?

....
Yes... context is a big deal in understanding communications - both spoken and written.
Who on a forum for RV owners would confuse TV for Time Vaporizer, etc.?

Yes, I was in the military but, even worse, I worked for IBM almost 25 years and we were kings of acronyms.

By the time you (OP) have been here long enough to have as much as, say - 200 posts, the context-relative choices for acronyms will be easier for you.

Another computer acronym for scanners: TWAIN Technology Without An Interesting Name

I found that amusing years ago.
