VHF Radio install (inside and outside!)

Installed my VHF radio we use for my race team in the DX3. Installed one head next to the CB and the other in the area with the outside TV. Both go back to a single radio. Wire routing since it’s on the slide was especially challenging. But it came out Very trick! Antenna is on left mirror with a clamp on, however since I’ve done this I found the part number for the same bracket used on the driver side CB antenna. Would have used that if I knew it.

The actual radio is mounted in the cabinet that’s on your right side next to the stairs.

Nice work. I need to to do this at some point. Probably going to just put it where the CB goes though because they seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur in recent years.

Im using a Kenwood TK-790H, the go-to radio for desert racing communications. Its used in police, fire, and state service vehicles....well, until most of them went digital. TheTK-790H allows 2 heads to be used.



That said i also have my HAM license, so i also use my radios for talking to the repeaters. My company also has a commercial licensed frequency and repeater, so i can hit that too (Although don't really ever need to from the DX3).


Great radio, pretty much indestructible...the only downfall for HAM use is you need to program via a computer...you cannot program from the head.

Better be careful. It is illegal to use a VHF radio on land. I believe it is around a $10,000 fine if caught.

Incorrect, its not only legal, its used by thousands of individuals, public services and company's. Let me explain...


Using the VHF MARINE frequency's or marine radio on land is forbidden, except in special cases.


Using standard VHF frequency's on land is allowed, with the proper license.


I have my HAM license and a license for 2 commercial frequency's. On the commercial side im licensed for 100 Watts power.



All that said, it should be noted, it is Legal to use any frequency, in case of emergency where "Life or Property is in danger". So in an emergency use whatever you got. That question was on my HAM exam, so im sure most of the HAM guys know it....
