Where ever I’m parked is home
They say crap comes in three so I’ve now had my three for the day....

Been RVing for over 30 years and have NEVER had a water filter fail to the point that it allowed all the little pieces of carbon inside of it to totally shut down my water system!!!!

Woke up this morning and toilet wouldn’t flush (no water); then no water on cold water faucet in same bathroom....

Upon arriving at CG this afternoon, I disconnected the water line from the toilet and discovered the line was FULL of little black particles....

Then took ends of all faucets off and discovered they were also full of same stuff.....

Went outside to check filter and discovered it had failed and had released abt 1/3 of its innards into my water line...

After about 3 hrs of effort, I’ve cleared everything but my NEW toilet... No water will come thru - city or water pump....

Guess my next call will be to a mobile tech.... Not about to go to CW just down the street....

Finally got everything working again...

Had to go out to water compartment and turn off water to toilet... Then reached way back behind panel and disconnected water line going to toilet...

Then went inside and connected water hose to other end (one that attaches to toilet).... turned on water full force and discovered that only a trickle came out the end in the water compartment...

Got a long stiff wire and ran it up hose from water compartment end..... could feel blockage..... continued to jam wire in and out until water flowed full force ...

Lots of black carbon came out but now toilet flushes.....

YEA!!!!!!

What filter are you using, and where did you buy it?
Just curious because the Amazon is chock full of fake junk.

I didn't buy mine off Amazon.... I bought a 6-pack from a reputable RV dealer a year or so ago....

Haven't had a single problem with the others..... Does make me more vigilant on checking the condition of them occasionally now...

Ah, gotcha. Might be an anomaly then. Surprised that the inlet screen to the TT did not stop enough of the particulate.

Oops. Saw this was a MH, but I would think there would be a screen somewhere. Maybe time to add one.

On my coach, the city water goes directly thru thus huge filter and then it’s dispersed throughout the rig...,

BUT if the filter fails there’s nothing to catch the little granules of carbon that make up the interior of the filter....

That’s what happened to me.....

Ernie’s experience with the filter does concern me. A new thing to worry about.

I gave up on FR’s KW1 filter and installed a 10” Camco filter in the same place in the coach. I run another 10” Camco filter at the post. I put 1 micron fibre sediment filters (no carbon) in the filter at the post and 5 micron carbon filters in the coach. My reasoning is that I don’t want sediment in my tank or the rest of my system, but I would like chlorinated water in my tank. The carbon filter takes out the chlorine just before I drink it.

If I reversed my system and put the sediment filter after the carbon filter, I wouldn’t get caught with Ernie’s problem. But, then the reasoning behind my dual filter approach falls apart.

Ernie is giving us a lot of write ups about what can go wrong with an older coach and how to deal with it. I’m really impressed with his patience and appreciate his sharing of the experiences.

Gordon....

I appreciate your kind words.....

Actually the age of my coach plays no part in my most recent posts:

The water-filter failure was the filter not the coach.....

I don't believe the age of my coach has any bearing on the fan clutch issue either since some of my buddies with much newer rigs have had to replace theirs....

LOL..... A bunch of my buddies have tried for years to get me to "up grade" to a newer Berk and my response is WHY????

Mine's paid for and I know every square inch of her.... I've added a ton of "extras" as well....

To have a 2008 coach with only 75K miles on her is pretty good I think - especially since I put 12K of those on our 40 state adventure last year....

As I tell my wife, we are living in a rig that's operating off components that are basically 12 years old so I'm not concerned that "things" occasionally need to be replaced....

Hopefully we will be able to get out of here soon and can continue our journey....

Hm... maybe adding an easy-to-get-to screen filter after the filter might not be a bad idea? I need to add one to our water regulator, as the last campground we stayed at, I noticed some little bugs stuck in the end of the regulator after disconnecting the water hose. I turned on the water for a few seconds before connecting it, just to flush out anything that might be in there, so these must have been in their water supply upstream further.
