I accidentally broke out my main window on my travel trailer mowing grass when a rock got kicked out at it in the spring.

I called the dealership and scheduled an estimate. I had to bring it in for the estimate, which they said was necessary so they would get the exact right part. They said it would take 3 weeks to get the replacement window in, and then they'd be able to put the window in within the next few days after getting the part in. It was more than I wanted to pay, but I figured getting the exact part from the factory was worth it rather than going to a local glass company, since the broken window is in a thousand pieces and is an oblong type window. So, I paid the deposit and waited for a call.

Fast forward five weeks after, I call the dealership to inquire about if the window is in, and the service manager tells me it is. I got no call, as they said they would. They ten told me it would be over a month until they could get me in. I reminded him that they told me it would be only a few days after the part got in, and they told me to go pound sand, basically. Unfortunately because I already put in a deposit, and because it had already been so long, I didn't really have much of a recourse, so I scheduled the appointment.

I got the trailer back yesterday, the bill was $150 more than the agreed upon price. They said it was due to "increased freight charges." If that was indeed the real reason, that was a 250% increase over what they initially told me. Eventually they agreed to allow me to 'only' pay the agreed upon price, and then acted like they were doing me a favor. They only agreed to honor their original quote after I asked to see the actual freight charges, which they never showed me.

When I picked it up, the sun was shining at me and made a shadow over the window that was parked close to the next trailer. Everything looked okay at the time. When I got it home, and was able to see it better, I discovered they put in the wrong window! I had all clear (non-tinted) windows throughout, including the one they were to replace. The new window is tinted and sticks out like a sore thumb. I spoke to the service manager about it, and he said there's nothing he can do about it, that they ordered the right part. Forest River must have changed it.

I advised him that he should have called me before doing the work after discovering the window was different, as I would have declined the service, even if that meant eating the deposit. I asked for a refund, a partial refund, nothing. He just kept telling me there's nothing he can do. No apology. No offer to help in any way whatsoever. He even went as far as to tell me that the old window was also tinted, which it definitely wasn't, and I have pictures of the before and after.

Eventually he said he could put back in my broken window for me, free of charge (yes, he actually said this), but they couldn't refund me the money I paid for the new window. What a joke this is.

I called my insurance company, and they can't do anything since I already replaced the window and I didn't file a claim (since it was less than $100 more than my deductible). I figured as much.

I'm actually trading it in tomorrow to a different dealership, and I'm worried they're going to see an obviously different window and that it will negatively affect my trade-in value. We're also traveling 500 miles to trade it in, so if we get hammered on the trade-in because of this, we can either take the lower value trade, or choose not to make the deal and possibly lose our $500 deposit plus whatever travel expenses we incur.

I don't know what to do, or what recourse I have. Right now I think I'm just going to drive down to make the trade and roll the dice that this doesn't affect trade-in value. Hopefully it doesn't, and it will be a moot point, and I will just avoid this dealership and right them a poor online review.

Funny thing is that I had a great buying experience at this dealership and have recommended them to many. Their service department completely tarnished this though...

Oh, and when looking at the Forest River website, all the pictures show clear, non-tinted windows. The service manager said they changed the part number because all the new ones are tinted.

When reading the receipt/work order, the part number F100117461 is
"WINDOW, 48" X 36" FULL HORIZONTAL SLIDER, CLEAR GLASS, BLACK FRAME (9-CT5-02506)"

If they don't have a signed (by you) estimate with the jncreased charge and different part, I would.fight it, even filing a claim with the credit card.if you used one.

Isn't there a law or something that says anything over $75 lore That the estimate has to be approved?

Dealers are complete schysters anymore. They rarely see return customers so they don't care to keep them happy

Roll the dice they probably won’t notice if they do call it an upgrade tell them you paid extra for tinted

Here's what I would do.... Don't worry about it. I would't assume the tinted window is going to make any difference at all in your trade. The new dealer is going to be glad to have your TT on their lot to turn over to someone else.

Move on to your next TT and never step foot in that other previous dealer again. Let us know how it all goes.

Hang tough with your trade in for the best price. Let them know that are you are willing to walk away from the trade and sale if need be. Turn the tables on them and make the sales person squirm. Remember, he wants that commission badly. Make him walk back to the sales manager's desk to "negotiate on your behalf" :roflblack:

Regarding the first dealer and the window, that is just par for the course with almost all dealerships. I have a few choice stories myself this year with dealerships.

If the new dealer hasn't seen your trade in, and gave you a good trade in price, be assured that that they will find anything to beat you up with. That's how that game works.

I traded an RV at a dealer who offered a better trade price then another. Once I arrived with my trade, they had the shop check it out and knocked $10,000 off the trade.
As we were walking away, the offered $2000 less but I needed to buy an extended warrantee for $6000, so they could make some $ on the deal.

We wanted the new rig so I said OK. A month later, I canceled the warrantee, which took 4 months, and got my $6000 back.

Update: We bought our new camper and made the trade with no issues. The new dealer didn't notice, or didn't care, about the new tinted window. They gave us the quoted trade-in value without any argument.

Fortunately the new window didn't matter, so I can just move on... and never do business with Susquehanna RV again.

And now onto buying a bigger truck. The last trailer was right in the middle of the towing range. The new one is within range, but on the higher end, and it just doesn't tow well, and my F150 struggles up and down inclines. Ugh. I really didn't want to buy a new truck, but it looks like I'm going to have to...

All's well that ends well! :)

So, much ado about nothing.

Well, no, it wasn't about nothing, although it ended well for me. Fortunately I was trading it in, and they didn't care about it. However, the RV dealer didn't know this, and wasn't willing to make right on their mistake.

Don't confuse transmission downshifts with "struggling" they're designed to do that. Let the transmission shift for itself. Not sure how they can "struggle" downhill though. Gravity.

I'm not confusing transmission downshifts. That's nothing new with any sort of towing, or driving in general. I live in the mountains.

I'm honestly not sure how you're not sure a vehicle with a towed load can struggle downhill. Uphill is always the easy part of towing. It's the downhill where you really see how well your tow vehicle performs with the load it's carrying.

I totally understand your situation. My half ton had a 12,000 lb max tow rating and there was no way I'd ever pull even a 10,000 lb trailer. It pulled my 6000 lb GVWR trailer with ease through the mountains. The middle range is the perfect area that doesn't overtax the driver or the truck. My personal limit with my new truck is 7500 lbs. After that I'd be looking at a 3/4 ton as it would be much better suited for the long-distance mountainous driving I do.

Put a different tune on your existing truck before spending for a new truck. For example: Tow Mode is just a different tune, changing engine parameters, transmission shift points, etc...
